Swing Sets and Summer Safety

Swing Sets and Summer Safety

Summers can be long with the “I’m Bored” syndrome that kids experience. Parents are trying harder to have fun activities for kids that don’t necessarily involve electronic. It would be fantastic if instead of turning on the television set they would pick up a good book. Biker rides with friends, swimming at the pool and just outdoor activities in general are ideal to help cure summer boredom. Some parents are bringing the park home by purchasing swing set equipment for their backyards. While this doesn’t replace a fun trip to the park, it can be very convenient for parents to be able to send the children outside for a bit of fun without them under foot.

One concern a lot of parents have about backyard swing sets revolves around their safety. Because they are playing in the backyard and not in a public place such as a park, we might tend to think they don’t need as much supervision. While this is somewhat true, it is still important to remember safety and put some rules in place to do so.

The way to do this is by planning. Before the swing set is even installed, pick its location carefully. Measure the amount of space you have and take a look at the surroundings. Does it offer enough shade for hot summer months? Is it set far enough away from fences and trees that the swings won’t bump into them? Is there enough space around the actual playground and free from obstacles? It is important to make sure the set is secure and anchored properly. In case of falls, it is important to have a safe landing space. You can purchase ground rubber, wood chips or sand to cushion falls. This is one of the most important aspects of the play set equipment, so it is important that you don’t skimp on it.

Older children need not be under constant supervision, but it is important that younger children still be watched at all times. While these swing sets offer fun in the sun, it is important to always remember safety first.
